Plants, animals, and people living in Coastal North Carolina are influenced by large, shallow bodies of water, called "Sounds." The Sound's daily influence can be a challenge or a gift. The word "sound" also means "in good condition; not damaged, injured, or diseased." Sound Harvest and Garden will try to reflect both those meanings, as I aim for sound vegetables, herbs, chickens, eggs, and ornamentals, all from my home by Core Sound.

Yardwork Orange
There was a color theme to today's harvests: orangequats and the rest of the carrots. I cleared most of the carrot bed, harvesting these and the last of the lettuces. I left the cilantro, only because they are going to seed, and there were honeybees on the flowers. The lettuces were so old that their stalks were like shrubs. Huge root systems as well. Why all this cleaning out? I needed the space because I planted potatoes, yukon golds! Although usually a no-no for small gardens, they were so good last year, and I caved again when I saw the seed potatoes at the garden center.
